It was not too long ago when a rich businessman of Indian origin decided to conduct his daughter's wedding in Versailles where the celebrities like Aishwarya Rai were invited. For another business parivar , gold coins were gifted to all the celebrity guests. Today, I came across a report by a national channel on the latest high budget marriage between two bigshots in Delhi. Indeed , it's just a marriage between the bank accounts of two powerful politicians with a visitors list that supposedly runs upto the Prime Minister of India. Call it a 'merger' or an 'acquisition', the total (official) expenses for this 'biggest Indian wedding' could be estimated at over 21 crore rupees!.. Mind boggling numbers for a middle class guy.
Marriages may be made in heaven, but to be executed on planet earth, a huge amount of wealth needs to change hands. The ostentatious display of wealth apart, where does all this money come from? This brings us to the question of introducing direct tax on marriage with tax slabs defined based on the expenses for a marriage with clear audits done and holding people accountable for default in payment of the taxes for reasons whatsoever it may be. I do know that there is a supplychain of wedding planner, florist ,event managers, DJs who might get affected out of this ...Who knows?? ... out of empathy for such a supplychain the reverse too might happen , the Finance ministry might actually think of even subsidizing marriages or even provide tax holidays for wedding planners in Delhi.
